(still) nursing

Friday, November 30, 2012

I went into the hospital with the thought that if breastfeeding works, great.  If not, no big deal...formula it is.  Then just a few minutes after his birth he latched right on (just as I was about to pass out and threw up from the massive blood loss.)  But regardless, a few minutes later little baby was suckling away!

It felt natural.  There were no sore nipples or refusal to latch or bleeding or any other terrible thing you read about!  So then I gave myself the goal to breastfeed for 6 months.

In the beginning, nothing was easy.  And the massive amount of time you give to nursing a newborn is tiring.  I remember at 1 month saying that I was 1/6 of the way there.  But then once the reflux was fixed and he stopped screaming all the time, nursing just became part of our day and not a big deal at all.  Actually it's even easier, you never need to remember bottles or ice packs or formula and water...lunch is always ready!

And the time together is actually kind of irreplaceable.  You really bond with your baby and get to know his little personality.  In the beginning nursing was my only quiet time when he wasn't crying, so that was when I would talk on the phone or watch hgtv (house hunters was a fave in the middle of the night and Hoda and Kathie Lee replayed at 2am, another goodie!)

But as he became more aware of his surroundings, he got distracted. So now we sit quietly and I check e-mail and facebook and instagram on my iphone while he drinks and looks around and moves his arms constantly up and down my chest and arm and face, stopping to grab at my shirt or pull on my necklace or hair.  His little arms are my favorite.

And his hands....he's into squeezing them as he drinks too.  Or wrapping his fingers around mine.

Nursing time is a time for just the two of us.  It's never fast.  He takes his time.  I've thought many times how lucky I am that I have this time to give to him and that I don't have to rush him.  This is what maternity leave is for right?   He often takes little breaks to play with my hand and put his palm up to mine.  Or dramatically turn his head the other way and stare at the other side of the room before resuming his meal.  Then there's the enormous smile when I hold him up at the end.

Somehow these wonderful moments outweigh the fact that I can't be away from him for more than 3 hours and that he won't take a bottle and I have to be there to put him to bed every night.  Are there times I wish I had that freedom?  Absolutely.  Will I do things a little differently next time?  Definitely.  But these times won't last forever.  And I will drink them up while I still can.

Decking the halls!

Thursday, November 29, 2012

As soon as I put Carter to bed on Thanksgiving, it was down with the give thanks banner...and up with the red & gold Christmas garlands!  I just couldn't wait to deck the halls!

Then Friday morning (after carter & i did just a little black friday shopping) we put up the tree and stockings and garlands and reindeer galore!

He beamed admiringly as I showed him each ornament as I decorated the tree and loved when I gave him an ornament to play with!

Oh, the joy of Christmas!!

First Snow!

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Carter was up before the sunrise at 5:35 this morning...he must have known it was SNOWING!!!  We waited for the light and ran outside (before Christian left for work) to experience his first snow!  He was ummmm....mesmerized?  Captivated?  Well, mostly just sleepy by then...

We bundled up and headed to market to walk around (and take a nap in the car on the way...)

When we came home the snow stopped, but the walkway was slushey and slippery.   So we whipped out the shovel and I plowed off the slush while holding Carter, who busted out laughing,  deep belly laughs each time I pushed the shovel!

All of the snow excitement and early wake-up must have worn him out, because he's taking a nap in his crib!!!!  I can't remember the last time that happened!  Sleep tight my little snow angel!

Carter's first Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Carter started his first big holiday by sleeping in until 8:20!

We played and watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Then we were off to the park to take our Thanksgiving morning family walk and play on the playground.

Then we spent the afternoon/evening with my family at my parent's house.  Carter's thanksgiving feast included mango, pears, and oatmeal.  Not necessarily traditional, but so yummy anyway!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you, Jess for taking these beautiful pictures!
They really capture Carter's 6th month personality perfectly!

baby favorites- 5 & 6 months

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Here's the next set of our baby faves...for 5 & 6 months
Bright Starts Around We Go- BEST TOY EVER!!  He stands in it and scoots/walks around the table to play with/ chew on all the different toys, music etc.  He loves it because he's vertical and it's great practice for standing and walking!

Fisher Price Mirror- He's loved this for a few months, but now can sit by himself and play with it.  He loves banging on the keys and watching the lights flash and hearing the silly songs.

Sophie le Girafe- Everyone talks about how great this teether is and I wasn't sold...for a few months he didn't care for her at all...just threw her down.  But the last month or so he just loves her...always smiles at her squeaky noise and constantly in his mouth!

Angel Dear Lovey- The best thing about this is how easy it is for him to grab.  He loves stuffing the head into his mouth too.

Jellycat Monkey- He's loved this little stuffed animal for months.  We used to use this to entertain him during diaper changes, but now it just makes him happy any time.  He is only 7 inches tall so he can easily grab him and stuff him in his mouth too...see a pattern here???

Any clothes from BabyGap...obsessed!  Love their favorites one pieces with easy zippers and the adorable onesies and hats.  I can't stop.

Sleeping through the night...oh yeah!

Monday, November 12, 2012

Carter slept through the night on November 8, 9, & 10th!!

7:30pm-6:00am------AMAZE-BALLS!!!

However, I continued to wake up a bunch of times, checked the clock, checked the monitor, and went tried to go back to sleep.  :)

At his 6 month appointment he went from the 90% to the 75% and the doctor said he needs carbs so we started mixing in oatmeal with his veggies for dinner and started giving him solids for lunch too!

No South Beach diet for this boy..bring on the carbs and the full night's sleep!

my blog

Thursday, November 8, 2012

this blog has become my project.  in a time in my life when I get/give myself very little time and energy to cultivating me, I've found my inspiration in reading blogs and writing this, for me.  and well, for you too.

I started this blog because I felt alone in the beginning of motherhood, filled with "whys"  why didn't anyone tell me i'd cry all the time?  why didn't anyone tell me contractions felt like diarrhea pain?  why doesn't my newborn sleep?  why won't he stop crying?

my goal was to help other new mommies too.  to know that you are not alone.  know that you may cry all the time.  your baby may not sleep. you will not sleep.  there's just something that makes you feel better to know it's not just you.  you are not alone.

but this also turned into a place to celebrate the funny little moments of motherhood.  like eating cool ranch doritos and root beer and calling that lunch.  or wanting to punch your sound-asleep husband in the face as you get up for the 4th time that night.

this has become a place for me to remember the little milestones that we celebrate everyday.  like taking a nap in his crib, touching his toes, finally getting out of the house in the bjorn.

when i get a little me-time, this is where i come.  so i will remember this crazy/wonderful/exhausting time in our life.

so i finally decided it's time to upgrade the layout & found shabby creations.  the chevron, soothing color, and stripes...love it!

even though motherhood may not always be pretty, at least my blog can be!

smiling adoringly at my then 3 month old

Fall Decor

Sunday, November 4, 2012

Being a stay-at-home mom definitely doesn't give you alot of time to do much of anything...especially when your son doesn't nap or only naps in the car.  But car naps do give you time to play on your iphone and pinterest!  And since I'm home sooooo much more than I used to be I've been taking my free moments to decorate our home for Fall!

November 1st- it was down with Halloween and up with Thanksgiving!

If it weren't for the free give thanks and happy thanksgiving printables I think I would've skipped right over Thanksgiving decor and moved right onto Christmas...but thanks to TomKat studio, we're decked out for turkey day! Super cute, right!??!! And did I mention, free?!!?

Halloween 2012

Friday, November 2, 2012

We started our day with a trip to Target...

Then it was time for the lion costume...

ROAR?
Not a fan of the mane...but when the mane was down... it was better!

Then when it was time for trick or treat he got dressed in his other costume the zebra!

and that went much better!

We went to visit our friends, super man and wonder woman too!
Happy Halloween!
