Halloween 2016

Tuesday, November 1, 2016

Carter was about to burst he was so excited to Trick or Treat!  He was bouncing off the walls until it was time!  He loved his Seahawks uniform that even had shoulder pads!  He sprinted down each driveway after he put the candy in his pumpkin and kept a running toll of the number of skittles he got and kept me updated.  He thought it was the best night ever!

And then there was our little fireman.  Reid had a fever the night before and although the fever was gone on Halloween he was super irritable most of the afternoon.  Of course he didn't understand what trick or treating meant so he wasn't really game to keep his costume on or take pictures.  He went from smiling and happy one minute to scowling and throwing his hat the next.

That pumpkin bucket hit the ground many, many times last night.

During one of his little tantrums he walked away from us to our neighbors front walk where she met him and started putting treats in his pumpkin and he thought that was great.
So then he was ready to go.  Sort of.   Once we got him in the green push car and he got a hang of trick or treating he was super excited to yell the sweetest little "trick or treeeeeeeet!"  and "thank you" then he would run to me and show me his candy.  But in (almost) two-year old style there were plenty of tears between houses and indecision of whether he wanted to ride, be carried, or walk.  Overall, he loved trick or treating.  We'll blame the not so sweet moments on a little lingering sickness and tiredness.

I'm disappointed of course that I didn't get a good picture of the boys together and have to settle for this:

So I thought maybe I'd try today for a better one, but this one pretty much sums up Halloween 2016!

Last week the boys and I were in our back yard playing in the water table and this week I dug out hats and gloves.  Our fireplace has been on everyday (which I do love!) and I've been drinking hot coffee and even had tea one afternoon.  I'm wearing leggings and a tunic.  NO!!!!  Too cold, too soon.  I'm not ready for this yet.      Luckily tomorrow it's supposed to be 70!

Now a little catch up post and alot of random thoughts this week:

one.
Last Saturday Christian and I went to a "Famous Couples" Halloween Party.  We had a bunch of ideas and were leaning towards Tarek and Christina from Flip or Flop but ultimately decided on Danny & Sandy from Grease.

This was the best pic of us from the night- ugh.  major fail- but at least it was before my curls flattened!

two.
This weekend we have 20 people from our playgroup coming over for pizza before we head to Happy Hauntings at Dutch Wonderland.  And I'm totally lacking ambition for making a Pinterest-worthy party.  My pre-kids self is completely devastated that I'm not spending every waking hour crafting and whipping up cute treats.  Instead we're ordering pizza and maybe I'll make a veggie tray into a Jack-o-lantern shape.  Lame.

I did make an invitation on red stamp.  That counts for something.

three.

I'm really loving essential oils and have even sold Christian on Stress Away!

Carter had a fever yesterday so it's been non-stop Thieves and lemon diffusing.  And I now am diffusing Lavender and lemon at night.  And this week I've been trying different roller balls.  I'm kind of obsessed.

four.

I've made a goal for myself to make Reid's birth/first year album before he's 2.  So I only have a few weeks left.  I've started one at Shutterfly and I'm just not loving that one.  I also started one on MPix and just recently Artifact Uprising.  They just take sooooo long to make.  Any suggestions for where you got one and loved it?

five.
And now some recent pics...

Friday, October 21, 2016

Well it's been an interesting week- I had a broken tooth and a huge new filling and am dealing with some effects of stopping nursing Reid- another post on that another day.

But I did see my friend Lynde, who now lives in Australia!  So that was a highlight!

one.

I've been having all kinds of sleep issues lately and I think (cross your fingers) I found a solution and it's not taking Simply Sleep like I had been for ages.  I've been using Young Living Stress away if I wake up in the middle of the night (every night!) and I actually go back to sleep!  I've been diffusing for 2 years but just recently decided to try more oils and I can honestly say I feel a difference.  As of now it's safe to say everyone I know will be getting a roller ball for Christmas!

two.

In the last 2 weeks 3 of my friends have asked me about my TOMS.  And I can't recommend enough my TOMS Avalons.  They are so comfy.  I still wear my other pairs, but these are definitely my faves.  I have 2 pairs- a metallic and a black/white/grey stripe (similar).  And almost every time I wear them someone comments on them.  Just FYI- I'd order a half size down- mine are a little big.

three.

Of course, you know I've been loving my 2 pairs of Articles of Society jeans but I really felt a need for some looser fitting jeans too- no one wants to wear skinnies everyday.  So I was super excited when I found these.  But then they sold out before I ordered them.  But they just restocked so I couldn't order fast enough.  I've heard great reviews so I'm hoping they look good- this is my first pair of boyfriend/ slouchy jeans.  For $34 I figured it was worth a try! (if the link isn't working- here's a similar pair but not distressed.)  They sell out super fast!

four.

This weekend my friend is having a couples halloween party and Christian and I are dressing up as Danny and Sandy from Grease.  I ordered the much recommended Spanx leather leggings and picked up some 50's accessories from Amazon.  Both Christian and I are a little nervous about the tight-fitting outfits- but I'm sure it will be fun.  I'll have to sneak a pic though because he demands that no pictures get on social media!

five.

I'm a week behind but last week I went to see The Price is Right!  We had our t-shirts made but unfortunately none of us got to "Come on Down."  It was very similar to the TV show and a fun night!

Happy Weekend!

falling off the wagon

Monday, October 10, 2016

This will be known as our weekend of falling off the wagon.  And I don't mean the dieting wagon or the fitness wagon or the drinking wagon.  I mean the wagon.

It started on Friday when we met Christian after work at a cute pumpkin farm.

We sat in rush hour traffic and it was super crowded but I pushed on for the idyllic pumpkin scenario.  We got a wagon and picked our jack-o-lantern pumpkin, took a few pics, and then waited in line to pay.

And as we waited Carter was playing on the wagon and toppled over, knocking over our pumpkin, breaking the stem, and ultimately landing on the ground on his forehead.  And then all hell broke loose with the screaming.   And of course all the people in front of us had wagons full of 15 different pumpkins and mums as we waited with a screaming child and our 1 pumpkin.

Not quite the scenario I envisioned.

Then on Sunday we finally had a date with our best fruit-picking friends to pick apples.  We had pushed it back a few times because of weather but we were determined to do this tradition like we have for the last 4 years.  It was cool, fall weather and the sun was just coming out when we arrived.

Since it's mid-October the picking wasn't quite as plentiful.  So we picked a few, attempted a few pics, but decided to head up to the farm store for ice cream.

Reid climbed on the wagon and was happily munching on an apple and Grace was pulling the wagon and Carter was pushing from behind.  Jess was ahead ready to take a cute picture when Carter started pushing really fast and before you know it, the wagon toppled- all the apples and Reid.  And there ended our idyllic apple picking adventure.  He screamed of course, but just had a few scratches and was fine but this adventure didn't quite live up to our expectations either.

We got ice cream and chatted and decided that, although it wasn't our most memorable year we will definitely continue the tradition next year.

Because although you may fall off, you always get back on the wagon.

Friday Favorites 10.7.16

Friday, October 7, 2016

This week actually kind of flew!  On Sunday I drove to DC for the day and spent hours sitting outside at a restaurant with 2 of my best college friends.  We chatted and drank glass after glass of wine.  We joked that it was like therapy.  I'm so glad I've finally made it to a point where I'm seeing my friends again and starting to get back to who I was pre-kids, even if it's just for an afternoon.  Where would we be without our girls??

And why didn't we take a picture?!?!  I have to use an old one circa 2010.

The rest of the week was full of playground play dates and school and anxiety over Reid's school anxiety.  It's going to get better...I keep telling myself.  We went to another fair so I've had my fill of
farm animals and prize-winning produce for the year!

Most days were the perfect fall weather- chilly in the morning and 70's in the afternoon.  But what is up with the bugs?  There have been so many of the teeny bugs flying everywhere (and biting Reid.)  Yesterday all of the slides at the playground were covered in those tiny bugs- gross!

So onto a few of my faves this week:

A repeat from last week because I love them so much....I raved about these jeans...and girls, I'm currently wearing them as I type.  They are so comfy.  $59.  I'm considering getting another color!

I've been looking at grey jeans and when I saw a pair of grey AG jeans on sale I ordered them.  I tried them on and wore them the next day.  Super comfy too- my only concern is ripping the knee hole when I sit with my legs crossed.  And I sit like that all the time.

I saw this on target.com and then when I saw it in the store I grabbed it.

And I got this too.  And I finally have a start to our gallery wall.

I love so much of the wall art at Minted and West Elm and could spend hundreds of dollars on our gallery wall,  But $39.99 at Target is more of our budget!  So now I need to find more before hanging everything.

And finally one night while laying in bed I pulled the trigger and ordered another pair of Uggs.  I really went back and forth about whether I should get them but since they are 33% off and a newer, sleeker cut I thought I'd try them and see.  It's been a few years since I've gotten a new pair and I feared that I'd go to order them one day and they'd be full price again!  When winter arrives I'll probably wear them almost everyday...so we'll see when they arrive.

One night this week I was craving cookies and I always know I have an eager baking partner (who makes baking take twice as long and twice as messy...)   Now if I'm really serious I go with this recipe but some nights just call for a good, quick mix & I highly recommend Ghiradelli Triple chocolate chip cookies.  I got a 3 pack at BJ's for less than $6.  They taste better than good old Toll House in my opinion.

Since we got rained out last week apple picking is hopefully going to happen this weekend and probably a trip to the pumpkin farm too AND maybe a final trip to Dutch Wonderland before our season passes end.  Talk about a crazy weekend- ha!

Five on friday 9.30.16

Friday, September 30, 2016

This week Carter woke up with ear pain so we had a visit to the ENT and missed school for both boys.  We went to a fair and had a delicious milkshake!  Carter rocked a dentist appointment with X-rays even (Reid's behavior on the other hand...) and we're surviving some majorly rainy days.  We're hoping the rain clears for some apple picking this weekend and I'm so excited to go to DC to see my college friends for brunch on Sunday!  Now onto my five!

one.

This week finally feels like fall and for the first time in months I broke out some long sleeves and jeans!  And the online orders are rolling in!  I just cannot think about fall when it's in the 80's.  I also broke down and bought some pumpkins!  I usually wait until October for pumpkins but the minute my Hooray Everyday fall garland arrived I was inspired to decorate!

two.
I just got these jeans and I've worn them 2, ok 3 days in a row.    Somehow during our move in May I  lost a pair of my everyday jeans.  And the only other jeans I have that fit are distressed.  So I felt like I needed some non-holey jeans for the more mom-appropriate activities.

They are so soft and comfy that I almost don't have to change into leggings when we get home (but I still do.)  I ordered my usual size, but thought for a minute about exchanging for a smaller size.  The waist is a little big for me but the legs fit (typical for me) so I just have to wear a belt.

The good news is they haven't stretched- even after 3 days of wear!  And they're $59.

three.

I'm not into selfies usually but I did post a selfie for  #fallingforfallphotos on IG and a bunch of people commented on my shirt.  It was a Nordstrom Anniversary sale find and was only $15.  It's super soft and I love the fall color but when I took it off I noticed it's dry clean only.  What?!  If you are still interested it's Lush and you can find some colors on sale ($14) here and other colors here.

I have a similar Caslon pocket tee that's cotton and machine washable that I like and found a few colors on sale ($8) this week so I ordered another one.

four.

I've been reading and researching a bunch of natural deodorants.  My biggest worry about switching from my good old Secret is the rash that a lot of reviewers said they got.  My hairdresser highly recommended Fresh.  But seriously, $19 for deodorant!??!

I'll be honest girls, I think I'm gonna try it.  I love Fresh products and they smell so good and she said it works great.  If you have other suggestions please share!  I'll be back in a few weeks with a full review of my $19 deodorant.

****UPDATE***

I went to Sephora to buy it and read the ingredients and it has aluminum in it so I talked to the sales girl and she recommended this instead.  ($16) So I bought it.  I'll be back with a review soon.

five.

I went to a Pinterest pumpkin party last week and I was totally inspired by the Good Housekeeping cover.  I had some similar ideas on my fall Pinterest board from years ago but couldn't believe that the pumpkins on the cover aren't painted, but instead they used balloons!

Of course the day of the party we were driving home from the beach and were stuck in tons of traffic so I was an hour late for the party and didn't stop for balloons and instead just painted my pumpkins.  But I'm intrigued...

Here's how my mini modern pumpkins turned out.

Hope it's feeling like fall by you!

Friday five!

Friday, September 23, 2016

Hooray for fall!  I had a delicious PSL this week and for a quick minute it felt like fall.  Now it's back to 88 degrees, but the forecast looks promising for jeans weather this weekend.  We're headed to the beach and then coming home for a Pinterest Pumpkin party.  Now onto my five...

one.

A bunch of people have asked for the car update....

photo cred: Christian (he insisted on a pic of me with the car for the blog!)
We ended up getting a Toyota Highlander last weekend and I love it!  We himmed and hawed for a while about when we should get a car and what it should be.  We were between an Acura MDX and the Highlander.  We decided we needed the option of 3 rows of seats for carpooling reasons.  And being a safety girl I was all about the blind spot monitoring and cross traffic sensors.

This is a pretty huge change from my previous car, a 2005 Lexus RX.  It had a tape deck.

Time to read the manual- who are we kidding?!  Time for a husband tutorial!

It's also time for the re-learning of many car habits---for all of us!  Carter already has hand prints all over his window, Reid threw a lollipop stick on the floor, and I'm really trying to throw out my Starbucks cups when we get home.  It's a work in progress.

two.

I guess I'm the only person who didn't watch "This is Us" and I obviously need to get to On Demand right now.

three.

But what I have started watching and loving is Friday Night Lights!!  I don't know why I didn't watch this years ago...

four.
Image result for chatbooks image
I just ordered my first chatbook.  I know I'm years behind.  But I'm thinking this could lead to much more posting on IG solely for the reason of printing the pics with captions.

five.

You know you love chocolate chip cookies and brownies and then you see a dessert with both of them in it and it sounds awesome but then you try it and it's just gross?!?!

Well these are not like that.  They are awesome.  Get one!

Happy Weekend!

It's been a while since I've pulled it together to post on a Friday.  Reid's short naps and life in general have prevented any major blogging time. It was a big week with school starting but the highlight of my week was going to NY to see my NYC girls on Sunday!  We sat around chatting for hours and it was so good to catch up!   And now onto my five...

one.
Shark Steam Cleaner
Image result for shark professional steam pocket mop
I admit in the last 6 months I have become somewhat cleaning-obsessed.  When you are home all the time a mess and clutter will make you crazy!  We can thank my friend for introducing me to first, the Dyson cordless, and now the Shark Professional Steam Cleaner.

I was telling her about how I get on my hands and knees to clean our hardwood floors almost daily.  I love Method Almond cleaner, but she thought that was ridiculous and said I needed a steam cleaner.  And she was right!

I got a major good deal ($49) at BJ's a few weeks ago and I've used in a bunch of times!  It's so much easier!  I love that it only uses steam and not unnecessary cleaning products.  And you just wash the cloths in the washing machine.

two.
Rodan and Fields Update

Image result for rodan and fields redefine pm cream
I started Reverse in the beginning of summer but got nervous about using the retinol twice a day because of the sun and being afraid that it was too harsh for my skin.  So I continued using it every night and just using Burt's Bees Sensitive cleanser and the R&F SPF in the morning.

So when it was time to re-order I just wasn't sure I wanted to continue Reverse and instead decided to try the Redefine PM cream.  So far I really like it.  I'm using the Reverse scrub at night and then the PM cream and eye cream.

three.
Running

2 weeks ago I went for my first run in years!  I can't actually remember when my last run was...maybe 3 years ago?  Since I had some issues after Carter's birth and during my pregnancy with Reid I couldn't even think about running but I really miss working out and one day I thought it was time to try!

My music on my phone was all messed up so I kept stopping to figure it out on that first run, but then I've gone two more times with only one walk break and it feels so great!  I'm hoping to run twice a week.  It's amazing how it changes your body and makes you feel so much better!
I will need to make a few running purchases, like some new sports bras and running shoes, and probably some shorts too!  After LOVING Athleta for swim suit tops this summer I just ordered a sports bra (on major sale) and a bathing suit (on major sale) for next year.

I'd also love music recommendations...I can only listen to Lady Gaga on repeat for so long!

four.
fall

I'm currently still in my full-on summer uniform- J.Crew shorts and a t-shirt.  But today it's 74 degrees and for the first time I thought about pumpkins!  I even got a pumpkin coffee today at Dunkin Donuts but threw it out after about 6 sips.  #Starbucksgirl

I'm getting excited to decorate for fall!  I'm getting mums this weekend and got a new fall wreath at homegoods today!

five.
Car shopping

We've been car shopping for the last few weeks and may possibly get a new car this week!!!  Both of our cars are old and over 150,000 miles so it's definitely time!  It will take me weeks to learn all the new features of a new car, compared to our old ones but I'm so excited for blind spot alerts and cross traffic monitoring--officially old!  But seriously backing out of Target parking spots will never be the same!

We'll see if it works out!!

Reid's first day of preschool: 2's

Thursday, September 15, 2016

Sweet Reid went to school for the first time yesterday morning!  I was super nervous that he'd scream and wouldn't let go of me.  But it was quite the opposite!

Taking pictures went about as well as you'd expect it to go!  These were the best of the bunch!  It was such chaos that I totally forgot to put his dinosaur backpack on before we took them.

He just watched Carter get his pictures done on Monday so I think that helped.

I can't believe my boys are old enough for their first day of school pic!

Then when we got to school we walked Carter to his room and he waved good-bye.  Then we walked to Reid's classroom and he said hi to his teacher.  And I carried him in and then he practically jumped out of my arms to run to the play kitchen.  He was running around from toy to toy so happily!

There was a Kissing Hand project for us to do, but he had no time for that.  So I kind of said good-bye, afraid to disrupt his excitement and I left.  My friend stopped by at 10am and said he was happily playing with cars when she peeked in!  But at pick up he looked pretty unsure and his teacher said he cried off and on for a while.  So we'll see what tomorrow brings- I'm thinking drop off will be a bit harder since now he knows that I leave....

Regardless I think this is so good for him. And I had a lovely hour and a half to myself.  I went for a run and then sat on our patio for a few minutes before running to pick him up!   I'm so ready for a routine and thankful that the school allowed him to be in the 2's class, even though he missed the cut-off!
